Goal

Enlarging the knowledge of Proverbs and Sayings by using crossword puzzles.

Introduction

There are a few method to use this manual. In the table below you'll find a few ways. Dependant on the level of the children one can choose for different ways out of the list (or make a plan yourself based on one of them).

Preparation

To prepare the lesson the following steps could be made, dependant on which method (online, offline) is used.
  • [Offline]
Enough crossword puzzles should be made so every student has a page (or more pages) with puzzles on it. These puzzles can be downloaded from the 'Crossword' page.
It is recommended to print a copy of the solutions for yourself (the teacher) as well.
  • [Online]
It is adviced to block the solutions to the crossword puzzles for each of the computers the students will work on. At the crossword page there should be a button making it possible to 'block' the solution to the puzzles for a specified amount of time.
During playing the students can fill in the puzzle and when the puzzle is correct the program will congratulate the student.

Planning

The following planning is an approximation of the times for the lesson.

Time (min) Activity
Introduction
During the introduction a short explanation is given about what is going to be done during the lesson. It should be a fun lesson and they can even learn something from it.
The intention is to solve the puzzles themselves or in groups.
Students work
The class starts to work with the given puzzles. Possibilities:
[Online]
The students go to the crossword puzzle page and there they will start to solve the present puzzles.
[Offline]
The students are given the pages with the printed crossword puzzles and then they can start solving them. If necessary a special piece of software is (soon) available (E-mail software@spreekwoord.net for more information). Another solution could be to put the answers at some place where students can take a look at them (or as teacher tell them the answer)
Conclusion
The last part of the lesson is being used to give the students the correct solution to the puzzles. For this it's possible to ask a student for a specific word (for example 1 vertical) and then the next student for the next word and so on. If there is not enough time than the solution to the puzzles can be given (or put at some place where the students can take a look at them).
